Oversized cargo can be categorized in many different ways. But simply put, when your cargo is either too heavy or has unique dimensions that will not allow it into a standard shipping container it is considered out of gauge or oversized. Also referred to as project cargo, it is much more difficult to ship these oddly shaped oversized goods. This is where freight forwarders are often needed. Although it is possible to manage these shipments yourself, it can be a logistical nightmare, and if the goods aren’t properly handled and packaged they can become irrevocably damaged.
Break bulk is a shipping method where goods that cannot fit inside of freight containers are shipped outside. In order to use this method, you will need to find a carrier that will work with your cargo. In many cases, air freight is not possible and ocean freight will need to be used for any international shipments. There are additional concerns as well. In order to load and unload your shipment, it may require specialized heavy lift equipment. Additionally, forms for this type of shipment may differ from standard forms.
When shipping equipment or machinery it is vital that you provide proper packaging to ensure that goods are not damaged in transit. Using the right crating and packaging materials is vital. Not only does this make it easier for carriers to load and unload your goods, but by using the right materials you can prevent damage. Freight containers provide some level of protection, but goods that do not fit in containers are at a higher risk of damage. Vapor barrier protection, heat shrink wrapping, padding, and blocking are all effective ways to prevent damage.
Any shipments heading internationally will need to clear customs in both the country of origin and the destination. Forms may differ slightly for break bulk shipping. And although customs clearance forms may be more or less the same, depending on the goods you are shipping there could be extra forms or different forms that need to be utilized. Freight forwarders can help navigate these forms and provide their expertise.
Another concern to consider is how to load and unload project cargo. Specialized tools are needed to lift and load oversized cargo. This requires companies to either have a team at the destination ready to unload the cargo or to work with an agency that can help load and unload cargo at both points.
